Dual Harmonies and a Singular Vision: Illiterate Light Takes Cambridge
On November 16, 2024, Illiterate Light delivered an electrifying performance at The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA, as part of their Arches tour. The night kicked off with Palmyra, a trio blending Americana, folk, and progressive rock. Their dynamic sound set an intimate yet vibrant tone for the evening. Palmyra was fire—I was pleasantly surprised by their energy and infectious beats, which immediately set the stage for what was to come.
When Illiterate Light took the stage, it was clear why they’ve earned a dedicated following. Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran, the duo at the heart of the band, brought their signature high-energy, genre-defying performance. Jeff’s ability to play guitar and manipulate a bass synth pedal simultaneously is a testament to their innovative approach to music, and the chemistry between them was undeniable. They began the evening by asking the crowd, “Are you ready to go there with us for the next 78 minutes. It’s Time to get unhinged.” Literally, I have never turned down the opportunity to get unhinged.
The setlist was packed with gems from their latest album, Arches, like the anthem “I Ride Alone” and the soul-stirring “Norfolk Southern.” And when they revisited fan favorites like “Sometimes Love Takes So Long,” the crowd was alive with energy, singing every word in unison.
The first time I saw these guys was at Inbetween Festival 2023 in Quincy, Massachusetts. All I remember is Jake, the drummer, charging around the stage and crowd like a madman, full of untamed energy and reckless abandon. It was impossible not to be drawn in by their bold, unapologetic vibe. It’s rare to see a two-man band like this, especially one that can deliver such a raw, electrifying performance without sacrificing who they are. That moment at Inbetween Festival captivated me—and so many others—leaving a lasting impression that made me want to dive deeper into their music.
But let’s get back to Cambridge.
The Sinclair’s intimate atmosphere was the perfect backdrop for Illiterate Light’s vibrant and eclectic sound. The venue’s cozy setting only amplified the band’s energy, creating a unique and unforgettable night. Known for their ability to transition from introspective ballads to explosive anthems, Illiterate Light’s performance resonated deeply, exploring themes of connection, resilience, and personal transformation. The energy they brought to the stage felt like a direct reflection of their journey as artists—one that started in the Shenandoah Valley and has only grown since.
And of course, it wouldn’t be an Illiterate Light show without Jake embracing his inner madman. Mid-set, he tore through the crowd with the same unhinged intensity I remembered from Inbetween Festival. He was like a bat out of hell, and we ate it up. It’s a testament to their fearlessness and passion for performing—something you don’t see enough of these days.
Illiterate Light is carving out a space for themselves as boundary-pushing musicians who stay true to their roots. This is just the beginning for them, and I’m genuinely excited to see where they go from here. I can already tell they’re on the verge of something huge.
